On the subject of solid cable breakage, after many years of flying C172 with both carb heat and mix cables with solid wire centers, I never had a breakage. I religously paid attention to the rigging, and made very sure the swivell was fully functional. To continue, ACS has an list of different sized 'B' nuts made for this exact purpose, for use with solid wire cables. The part number at ACS is '05-16210" for the first in the table of several different sizes. maybe these could assist with longevity of cable ends? IMHO! :)
