First Flight for Waiex N132YX

Postby dtwolcott » Mon Jun 25, 2018 11:56 am

Waiex 132YX flew for the first time on June 24 at CTK Ingersol Airport in Canton ILL. I was assisted by Bill Larson, good friend and fellow Sonex owner, and a good friend and camera man Kent Lynch. My previous flying experience has been in a Champ and an Ercoupe. Imagine my surprise when doing an approach with only that experience. This plane just wants to fly and is very responcive. Took several approaches to get the feel for the correct control inputs to slow the plane down to the proper speeds for landing. This is going to be a fun plane to fly.

Congrats Don!

Your going to learn something each and every flight. Some 625hrs in, with Waiex121YX, I still learn new things.
What engine do you have? Tail wheel or tri? If tail wheel, keep and eye on low fuel, max seat load, aft CG conditions when landing. It get super light in pitch and easy to over control. Steady and precise movements. Nothing fast and aggressive. Will take awhile before you get comfortable with minimum approach speeds. Sonex/Waiex are famous for floating if your a bit fast over the numbers. Plane will fly into ground effect and you find yourself looking sheepishly at your friends as you float by, waiting for the energy to dissipate. All good fun.
It will be awhile before your taking passengers and by then you should have a pretty good idea of the handling characteristics. Enjoy.

Congrats Don! I'll have to look up Canton and see if it is within 50 miles of C77.

Thanks Brian
CTK is 25miles southwest of 3MY (MtHawley) in Peoria. Nice airport with two runways 18 - 36 3900+ and 9 -27. Quite a few homebuilts at the airport. Has an EAA Chapter and a flying club.
