May 31st 2014 is the date. BBQ Ribs along with dogs and burgers and assorted fixins. Airplanes of all types invited. Hope to over over a dozen, possibly as many as 20 Sonex examples including at least one Onex. AeroV's, Jab 2200 and Jab 3300 Sonex/Waiex will be there. Flour bombing and spot landing contests. Come early and watch as some of us come from landing on 100x4000 ft runways to this quaint little 35x2300 span. Mistakes will be made, but hopefully all will be small and harmless. Personally, I have landed 2 or 3 times on a single approach there. Great group of folks turn out, usually 100-150+.

I'm going to try hard to get up there this year. This was the fly-in that really inspired me during my build.

The Waiex is an awesome airplane. I had to be home for my son's graduation party so I left San Diego (KRNM) at 5:40am and got to the fly-in at 9:30 with one fuel stop in Merced. The planes and people were great and the ribs were mmmm-mmmm good! I'll post again when I've processed the youtube video. Thanks for hosting this event - sorry I missed the flour bombing contest (I will have to figure out how to do that in a Waiex...). And yes, I got home in time for the party. (who would have thought you could do a day trip to Sacramento in a Sonex - definitely a cross-country machine).

I have posted some photos from the Rio Linda fly in. I had to leave at noon, so late arrivals are not in this photo set. Photos can be found on my build log under the Rio Linda 2014 section:
www.mykitlog.com/donbowenFor me, the coolest things were the Cozy Jet fly by's and the really slick wheel pants on Sonex N6UZ!!
I was not able to catch up with N6UZ's builder so I could ask him about those wheel pants. If Art Kruegar reads this, I hope he will contact me at
donbowen_2000@yahoo.com. I would love to get the RV wheel pant part number so I can build up a set of slick wheel pants for my Waiex.
Next year I will be there in N49YX!!! Thanks to all the Sonex and Waiex drivers who showed up. You really made my day!!

Thanks to all for making the trip down from North Idaho worthwhile. Twelve hours and 20 minutes round trip.
Thank you Ray Krause for putting me up again. One of these days I'm going to get a bill after three visits in four years.
My Waiex performed as I've come to expect. Trouble free except for one radio jack.
I was cruising along at 9,500' over Crater Lake, OR. and my bigger hole on the headset plug- in just fell apart and washers, insulators and such fell to the belly of the plane. Oh crap! Not to worry. I just unplugged from the debris and plugged into the passenger outlets and used the right stick transmit button. All's well that ends well!
Only excitement of the trip was first fuel stop at Montague airport in N. California. Wind was a nice solid 16kts gusting to 21kt on the AWOS. Pure crosswind. Try as hard as I could with every control I could muster I still ran the right main off into the sand before I could get her "whoaaed up".
I think I disappointed the guys on the ground watching. They figured I was really going to ball it up I guess?
Balance of the trip was uneventful. Madras, OR to Coeur d Alene, ID. nonstop. It was 301 miles with a jog around the Umatilla Army Depot near the Columbia River. I landed 2 hrs and 8 minutes later. Measured fuel remaining was 5.8 gallons after filling back up to the filler neck. I start off at 17 gallons.

I'm jealous Larry! I wish I could land in crosswinds like that!

Larry,
Don't forget, you paid for the dessert at the "walk-in" ice cream stand! That was more than enough reason to invite you!
Glad you had a good time; it was great getting to visit with you again.
Thanks,
Ray
