greetings and sonex buying

I'm Colette Miller, kit #1552. (colettesonex.blogspot.com) I'm building the aerobatic version of the Sonex and am probably 2 years away from first flight. I own a Citabria and usually fly it cross country between California and my summer home in Upper Michigan. My husband drives there, but his eyesight is deteriorating and I am becoming the designated driver. That means I need a second airplane in Michigan and my Sonex is not done. Buying a Sonex makes sense, since I'm building one. I have 2 questions right now. What does anyone know about Sonex serial #168 and #475. Also, has anybody tried to register an experimental that they bought in Canada. I've seen 2 nice Sonex in Canada, but worry about bringing them back to the U.S.

Hi Colette and welcome to the forum! The blog looks good. I have flown a couple Citabrias and liked them. I did my acro training in an S2A, only about 10 hours worth, and that was 20 years ago. No real acro since, though we did tend to honk the Pawnees around after we shed the glider. Still want a Pitts when I grow up. In the meantime I am looking forward to a little acro in the Waiex when I finish it.

Hi, Colette;

Sorry, I don't know anything about those two serial numbers. If you're a member of AOPA, I'd give them a call; I know they've had several articles about importing/exporting aircraft in general. Come to think of it, you're probably already an EAA member, so give them a call first and ask for their legal advocacy rep. I'm SURE they've encountered the same thing. (and the EAA legal assistance is free as opposed to the AOPA Legal Services Plan...).

Hello Colette,

Welcome to the forum boards! The only tidbit of information I can add is that I believe Sonex #168 was built in central Kansas and I think it's now owned by Charlie Radford. Charlie is on the board here (radfordc) and I'm sure he'd be happy to discuss the history of the airplane. Charlie has flown that Sonex to Oshkosh on multiple occasions, as well as Crossville, TN for the annual Sonex Fly Inn based there.

Hello Colette. Importing an amateur-built airplane from Canada is no big deal. But it MUST be amateur-built (not advanced ultralight) and it must have at least 100 hours on it. Call EAA at 888-EAAINFO (you ARE a member aren't you?). They have all the info you need.

I just now decided to sell my aerobatic Sonex. About 80 hours TT with a 3300 Jab, center stick, acro ailerons, tail wheel, leather interior, basic and simple digital panel w/760 Flightline radio. Always hangered in western Nebraska and I built it, SN 1178,finished in 2011. email me at kfeedpro@yahoo.com if interested and we will talk. I also built a gyroplane and now the Sonex suffers from not being flown enough as the gyro is just too much fun.
