Radio noise

Postby Glenn.hunt » Thu Apr 03, 2014 8:27 am

I am getting ignition ticking through the radio. Reception is not too bad but my transmissions are not very clear when revving over 2000rpm. I have the Aerovee. Has anyone had any experience/success in dealing with this? I have tried ferrite beads on the power feeds in various locations and on the coax cable but no help. I have checked all the usual culprits ( grounds etc) with no luck also.I remember some of you using noise filters and/or capacitors.

I used a noise filter. The type I used had both a positive and negative circuit. I believe it was a Pyramid brand designed for high end automotive audio. Not a peep after it was installed.

Can you get more specific on the filter and where it is installed? I have ignition noise in my Sonex/Aerovee which goes away when I switch off the primary ignition. I have shielded wires to the primary ignition switch. Any other suggestions are welcome.

That's funny, my primary is quiet. It's the electronic ignition that makes the noise.
I too am interested in Mr. Gibbs response about which filter and how/where to wire it.

At first, I had my radio teed into the ELT antenna under the windshield, like a factory plane, and the noise was bad. Got much better after using a larger antenna on the turtle deck.

Since the secondary ignition fires the bottom plugs, it should interfere more with bottom-placed antennas. Where is your antenna?

I remember a while back someone specking a Pyramid noise filter. I am just curious as to where it is wired into the system.

I would suspect that if it is wired into the aircraft, it is taking noise out if power and not out of the air. So, I would wire it near the power in of the radio. Perhaps I am not understanding the filter though.

Probably seems rash but I cut the copper cored leads off my primary ign as close to the magnetron coils as I could and installed ign lead joiners from" narva" and used normal automotive ign leads like on the secondary ign wires. So far after 50 hours I have no noise from my primary ign now and still fires the plugs ok....hopefully will be ok long term. When I emailed sonex they said I must have a radio installation problem and I probably did but this fixed it so that's how it's staying for now.
