Electric Trim System

Before I close up the skins on my Onex tail kit I want to explore some trim options available and hear your opinions.

Ideally, I'd like to have a Ray Allen type electric trim system for both rudder and elevator controlled with switches on the stick. I know that sounds like the height of laziness and probably is. I used to think the same when car manufacturers came out with radio controls mounted on the steering wheel but I can't imagine controlling the volume by turning the knob like in the old days :)

However, there is a lot to say about simplicity and the dial-a-trim system for both rudder and elevator may end up being the best option considering complexity, cost, weight, etc., etc.

Perhaps something in between?

The Ray Allen is certianly a quality product, but my money is on the dial-a-trim... electrons and I generally don't get along for long...

It would be fairly easy to put a geared DC motor on the back side of the dial-a-trim and wire it to the control stick buttons. I know there have also been a few builders that used the standard trim system and hooked a door window motor to the lever for electric controlled adjustments.

I may have posted too soon. After more research I see the Sonex has an in-flight adjustable elevator trim tab that many builders have connected to an electric servo. This feature is not offered on the Onex. I can see now how a similar trim tab on the rudder would work. Thanks for your comments.

On a side note, why do so few small airplanes in general have in-flight adjustable rudder trim tabs? For me it's so annoying to have to step on that right rudder (or left) for the 20 minutes or so it takes to get to altitude. At least that's what I'm used to on the left coast. Right coast folks don't need to climb as high :)
