Bill Orkis sold this airplane a few months ago to a new owner who was using the airplane for flight training.

Interesting. Sorry for the bad luck. Looks like after the fail the Aoa is really high, so high drag. I guess just not enough power to pull it out of that.

AoA - I wondered about that - or if it was an illusion caused by the wide angle lens.

I successfully flew after a canopy loss - even climbed - but I was one up and half tanks.

In that instance - canopy to on the ground - 34 secs. They walked away - not going to second guess that decision.

It is a 360 cam they have mounted on the wingtip. Those give some crazy distortion of angles. It's one thing I always try to be careful with when editing footage from mine, although sometimes it can make for a more dramatic video, in this case the AOA is exaggerated by the camera.

I talked with a guy who lost his B canopy in flight not too long ago. It resulted in an extreme nose high attitude and he was not able to make the runway with a perfectly good turbo aerovee and he didn't have enough pitch control to flare properly when he put it in a field just short of the rw. But he walked away from it. It seems that it doesn't fly well without the canopy.

I'm curious. Are guys failing to pin the canopy closed? Or is the locator pin through the longeron failing?

Did anyone who watched the video notice that left wheel pant? Couldn't be good for performance as it looked like it was acting like a speed brake catching wind underneath.
Was the plane destroyed or just damaged? Shame to damage a nice looking ship.
After watching it to the end and actually seeing the crash, my completely amateur observation is that during the first takeoff and ensuing flight, it appeared to me that the plane was struggling to gain altitude and 'seemed' like it was overloaded. If nothing else, it seemed underpowered.

Yikes! Saw the tail # and "incident" in the board index and my heart sank.

Glad everyone is ok. Also, that it was caught on camera, something to add to emergency scenario preparedness. Has me thinking...

I've discovered my locator pin missing on two occasions. Both during pre-flight. Not sure exactly when they went on walkabout. Locktite would be our friend if it weren't for the plexi. The current one is testing the tenacity of JB Weld.
