B and C voltage regulator

Has anyone tried the new B and C voltage regulator yet? I'm in the process of doing a few Firewall things and am curious whether their new voltage regulator provided a higher output at low rpm and maybe provide a charge or at least break even battery voltage instead of a discharge during taxi. It's costly, but with the built in crowbar it simplifies things and may be less prone to failure. Before I spend the money, I wouldn't mind some feedback.

hi gregg, all,
ive been watching these too. are you looking at the LRC-14? $180. plus they have an install kit for $45.
interesting to note is they reccomend to install on the cockpit side of the firewall. away from vibration and heat and moisture. built in low voltage warning , and over voltage crowbar.
jeff schultz mentioned these a few months ago. any thoughts jeff?
greg let us know if you get one and if you like it.

Hi Michael
Yes, that's the one I'm looking at. My guess on the cockpit side of the install is that the additional electronics in the Regulator can not stand the added heat from the engine compartment. Our standard regulators apparently generate a lot of heat and aren't too happy with the additional engine compartment heat as it is. That may be why they are failing. I think we are loading them at capacity on a regular basis. I'll probably get a B and C anyway even if I don't get any feedback but it looks like end of summer before My engine is running. I still have a ton to do yet so I won't be able to generate a report any time soon.

Hi gregg,
yes i’d go w the b& c new unit. it s should last forever. i think your right about the heat. i have blast tubes to my coils, jab 3300. on my to do list is a blast tube to the regulator.
keep at it and happy building!

The new B&C voltage regulator designed for permanent magnet alternators is the "AVC1", and B&C lists it for something like $260. According to their marketing department it was due to hit the website but the coronavirus situation interrupted that effort.
B&C says it will be available on the web shortly (time???), and that initial user feedback has been extremely good on the unit. I think this is an ideal option for all Jabiru, AeroVee, Revmaster or Rotax users that are looking for a replacement VR.

Gregg,
From your posts, it seems you have an Aerovee? Double-check, but my interpretation is the LRC-14 regulator is not intended for permanent magnet alternators like the Aerovee has. Even if it works, there's no field windings for it to control to increase the voltage at low RPM, so you'll be missing out on a primary benefit.
I'm not sure how common regulator failures are on the Aerovee. I have one installed in the recommended location without dedicated cooling and haven't had any issues with it.
Edit: I see Jeff's post now, the AVC1 sounds more like what Gregg was probably originally referring to.

hi jeff, chris, all,
thanks for the info and update. i thought the LRC-14 was the new one. i will wait for the AVC-1 to hit the webpage.
i plan on getting one. gregg did you see jeff’s and chris posts?
thanks jeff!

I confirmed with B&C that the AVC1 is available and ready to purchase. Until the website is updated, you'll need to contact sales directly (Nathan Bainbridge,
nathan@bandc.com). I've attached the product info flyer as well.

I'm not clear on how this regulator enhances low rpm charging output from out little 20 amp stators. Whats the scoop?

Yup Michael. I thought the LRC was the new one too. Glad Jeff set the record straight on that one. I'll be purchasing it and hope that it's reliable to justify the price.
