Guys,

I'm at the point I need to decide exactly how I want to handle exhaust heat in the engine compartment. I want to either coat or wrap the pipes. The question is which way to go. I just got a quote from Jet Hot for their "top of the line" coating and quite frankly I'm choking on it (~$500). $283 for classic polish.

That leads me to consider wrapping the pipes. Some folks claim that wrapping exhaust headers is a bad idea and will destroy them. Maybe corrosion is more of an issue with mild steel. Don't know.

Question: Has anyone running header wrap on their pipes had any issues with corrosion?

Can tell you that on the new to me Sonex - the exhaust pipes are wrapped. Generic shot of under the cowl - you can see what I mean. I'm still trying to get more heat out from under the cowl.

No idea yet about the corrosion issues.

Yea, the more waste heat that can be contained and disposed of the better.

So, while talking to the Jet Hot sales person I mentioned coating AND wrapping the pipes. Of course the answer I got was that only their most expensive coating was approved for wrapping, However, she also said that if their coating failed (which is ill defined) they will provide an upgrade for the cost difference. Also, the left pipe can't be coated on the inside due to my needing a heat muff for carb heat. That will diminish the effectiveness of the coating.

We just wrapped our pipes. I bought them used and they were wrapped before. I see no signs of corrosion.

I sold Bryan my exhaust when I installed the turbo and, at the time, I had been running those pipes around 2.5 years and 150ish hours, wrapped the whole time. No issues at all.

After I pulled the turbo I put a new set on, and have been running those wrapped for nearly 3 years and another 150 hours. No issues.

These are good quality pipes and we really don’t run them that hot. From my experience, I’ve seen no issues.

Been running header wrap for over 5 years and 400 flight hours. Not a spec of corrosion, even being tied down outside for 5 years.

My stainless headers have been wrapped for 400 + hours, no issue. My new b model will have mild steel wrapped tail pipes below the headers. I just can’t see how they would be more susceptible to corrosion. We’ll see.

I have been having heat related issues with my Aeroinjector. I put additional thermocouples to investigate temps. One at the carb throat one at the gascolator outlet and one just outside air cleaner. I had already installed a blast tube to the gascolator.

The heat wrap did nothing to help.

My CHTs and EGTs were nominal. Gascolator 90f, carb throat 150f and cowl air temp 120f..... gas was boiling in the carb.

I put a NACA submerged inlet in the bottom of the cowling 3" in front of the air cleaner. Problems solved!!!!
