Project Sonex

Hey all,

I'm in the process of acquiring a project plane. The fuselage, wings and vertical stabs are complete but not attached. The motor mount is not attached. My question is, will the fuselage fit in a 14 foot enclosed, flat nosed trailer?

To introduce myself. I started my flying addiction on an Air Command gyroplane, still flying it and lovin every minute of it. Wanted to fly longer distances and inside a cockpit so I got my PPSEL in June of 2017. Everytrhing was falling into place, I found a newly completed Minimax 1600 close to home and have been lovin every minute of it too. Well, the guy who built the Minimax was working on this Sonex. I said, hey, when you're ready to sell the Sonex, give me a call... I figured I'd have a couple years before he'd be ready to sell. To keep a long story short, I'm about to end up with a bunch of airplane parts... Yay!!!

The current owner is out of state, so i can't have him measure the fuselage to verify sure it'll fit.
Can someone give me the length of the fuselage, firewall to the rear without the H-stab or vertical stab installed?

Thanks for help,

Todd Noble

If the upper firewall is installed, you'll need 15ft. Without it, I measure 14ft 4in.

I figured it'd be close. Yes, the upper firewall is installed.

Thanks for the info!

If you removed the rudder, elevator and tips, it should fit.

Ok, thanks John.

I figure, if it's tight I might have to put it in there diagonally. Or use the angle of the firewall to my advantage and put it in upside down and elevate the tail.

Sonex parts made it to the hangar. Wings and tail aren't shown but they're in there.

The engine is an AeroVee 2002 sn0270. I found on the Sonex website, the press releases going from 2002 to 2.0 then 2.1. They specifically state that the 2.0 and 2.1 are 80hp but I've seen nothing specifying the HP of the 2002.

It's a used engine with no ignition, intake or exhaust.

Is the 2002 76HP or 80HP?

Any insight on the 2002 would be appreciated.
