It's what I have been waiting for(Great Plains will have to get along without me)I see it can be ordered without the master cylinder .Yeah :D
Toe brakes are now a reality without all the fuss of adapting another system .Sweet

Its an interesting design.
works by pushing the pads against the hub instead of pinching a disc like traditional disc brakes.
The benefit would be not having to remove the calipers when you need to remove the wheel like I do with the GP discs.
Many ways to skin a cat.

Looks like a cool setup. It's a good idea and looks like they did a nice job sticking with the KISS principle. If someone has or develops an independent brake system to attach to the rudder bars giving individual braking ability, I think a lot of Waiex people (including me) will be very happy!!

I'll be interested to see what people think of this setup once kits start heading out the door. I hope it's a good one!

Looks interesting but not what I expected. Pushing on one side of the rotor just doesn't seem right to me. There are reasons that almost every other disc brake setup out there grabs both sides of a rotor. Sonex typically doesn't release new product without alot of testing so I am hoping the new design works better than it looks. We will have to just wait and see once a few of the new brakes are being used out in the field.

Exactly, this setup will load up the wheel bearings excessively with every brake application. Think about when you first mounted your wheels.. if you tighten that castle nut on your axle to much.. the wheels don't spin. Good thing they are really cheap to replace. I can't say i like this system at first glance.. perhaps with some time the wheel bearings will prove tough enough to stand up to the abuse they are about to take. :?

It is a clever compromise between ease of assembly, fitting inside of the space of an existing design however. What the hell, i might just order a set anyway.

The fact that the brake only pushes on one side could be a big concern in combination with the Asuza wheels.
Remember, using enough force the bearings in the wheel can actually be pushed inwards, this allows proper positioning of the wheel on the axle.

A lot of people don’t know this and go and trim the axle spacer to position the wheel correctly on the axle but as per this instruction sheet, http://www.sonexaircraft.com/documents/ ... nstall.pdf (see last paragraph on last page), you should not have to trim the spacer, instead push the bearings inwards by over-tightening the nut and releasing slightly when proper position is reached, Sonex calls this “seating the bearing”.

Now, if the force of over-tightening the nut is enough to push the bearings on the Asuza wheels inwards, would the force of the brake pads pushing against the wheel not be enough to do the same, maybe over time, eventually leaving you with no braking power?

With all due respect to everyone's opinion....couldn't we see how they actually do in the field before declaring them badly designed?

I am putting them in my Sonex when I get to that stage...and have faith they wouldn't release them without some thorough testing. I could be wrong, but to me these comments, while certainly individual opinions that are clearly thought out and stated, don't have any basis in real world experience.

Just offering up my own opinion here.

I thought i remembered my bearings bottoming out on a lip within the wheel hub. Could be remembering things wrong.

In spite of my original reservations, i have ordered a set anyway. Like i said, the bearings may prove to hold up over time. But i don't think it is that far out there to have concerns, this is an unconventional system.

As I said previously these are what I have been waiting for.I don't believe they would ever release these if there was any problems. It looks like a no brain installation. Perfect for me

I can speak to side loading the Sonex wheel bearings, having sold bearings for
many years in a previous life. The bearings Sonex uses are same capacity (and
in some cases, the same part number) as those used as outer front wheel bearings
on many cars in the 30's, 40's, 50's, and 60's. Properly adjusted and
lubricated, they are just about bullet proof.
