Fitting a sonex in an L-hangar

Postby dxlusby84 » Mon Dec 26, 2016 6:15 pm

Greetings builders,

I'm trying to decide if I can get away with an L-hangar offered at one of my local airports. The price is very good for the area, but the fit looks really tight. I drew a 2D-mockup in Sketchup of a Waiex's rough dimensions and those of the L-Hangar (attached). It looks like I could build in one of these to completion, but unless I'm willing to remove at least one wing regularly or wiggle the plane into and out-of the hangar (think: 1-2 feet forward, pivot, 1-2 feet back, pivot, etc.), flying out of that hangar looks like a no-go. Unless one of you creative folks have some thoughts on how one could slide the plane in laterally... (something like a dolly under the main gears so you could just lift the back end up and push her out sideways?)

Also - I couldn't find any information on wing length nor lengthwise position of the wing, so I'm not 100% sure my rough line for the wingspan is located correctly - anyone know where I could find that info?

Love to hear your thoughts!
-Devin

I was doing the same exercise recently and scaled my line drawing using the wingspan.

Well all I can say is that the Onex would definitely fit - just sayin!

At my old t hangar we fit two planes nose to nose. We welded up a little track for each plane from two lengths of 1" angle. It worked great (and might work here). To go fly just place the track extension outside the door roll out the trolley, flip down the door hinges we used as ramps/chocks then push the plane aft.

Faster and easier than getting a plane out of a regular hangar because once on the trolley it is impossible to hit anything.

With Kevin's translation now I see the door is at the bottom of the picture. I agree, a dolly is the way to go. Plus you can keep your Onex in the back.
