Aluminum suppliers

Postby Darick » Mon Jun 08, 2015 2:27 pm

I'm not scratch building, so consequently when extra aluminum is required due to a screw up, it's not easy to buy $10 worth of aluminum. I'd just buy a CNC replacement part from Sonex but due to my mistake, the pre-punched holes will be off too much.

McMaster Carr has only a few sizes of 6061-T6, MSC no joy, local suppliers high minimums which leaves Aircraft Spruce but again $60 for a small sheet of 3/16 thick.

Any suggestions or am I stuck paying a lot for a part requiring only a 3" x 6" PC of aluminum?

I highly recommend Onlinemetals http://www.onlinemetals.com/. No order minimums and it usually ships the same day.

Where you at Darrick? Maybe I can go in with you and cut the damage in half. 3/16 would be useful.

Look at ebay item 281470971961. Five pieces of 3/16" 6061-T651 3" by 10" for under $17 shipped.

Thanks guys, I was able to get aluminum for a very reasonable price and learned about the difference between T-6 and T-6511.

I'll be working on the turtle deck next week after this short set back is fixed.

I found aircraft spruce to be the cheapest for the .025 and .032 sheet. Even with shipping. Just make sure you have them roll it to ship.

Do not know where you are located, but for small bits like that, might inquire with some local (steel) fabricator shops. Smaller ones are sometimes quite happy to help local folks if they happen to have what you need in stock, and might even have an appropriate sized drop off requiring no cutting.

I am fortunate to have a supplier near me in Richmond, VA. They are BMG metals. They do have an office in Baltimore as well. They do not always have my thickness in stock. i am scratch building and have had to make a few trips to them for oopses. I ordered my large order online from Texas. I was able to get all my 0.025 shipped to my house cheaper than BMG could do with me driving to pick it up. That was an 800 lbs shipment (includes packaging material).
