Anyone see or play with this freeware? A GOB (good ol' boy) showed it to me a couple of days ago. He had it running on an $80 refurbished Samsung 7" panel mounted tablet. I was pretty impressed at what can be had for free. If your panel is poorly located for GPS reception, you can blutooth connect your phone GPS and leave it on top of the panel where it gets better reception. You can sync your phone and tablet with a flight plan you file on your computer and have cheap backup. Cool beans . . .

Avare (pronounced Av - air) is what I use exclusively on my Nexus tablet. I have it mounted on my panel and it uses the internal Nexus GPS. It has worked perfectly for me for months. I use Track-Up a lot, but also like North-Up for situational awareness when I'm close to an airport and need to broadcast my position. This is REALLY good software. And since it also runs on my Android smart phone, and I always carry that in the plane with me, I have a ready backup. I still fly with a paper sectional close by (just in case), but Avare displays on a sectional, so there's a lot of build in situational awareness.

I mounted a 7-in Samsung tablet next to my GRT EFIS. It was going to talk to the EFIS via bluetooth. GRT has not done the connecting software for my Sport SX EFIS, so my back up plan was to install Iflygps (annual charge to keep current). It has VFR charts and I do my flight planning off-line and have it in the plane for back-up navigation to the GRT EFIS. The internal GPS works fine and I'm happy with both the GRT panel and the Samsung tablet. The Tablet is mounted in an Otter case for easy installation and I have a power plug into the panel.

You can get the 1090MHz signal demodulated with those cheap SDR sticks. With a USB-OTG cable and demodulation software running on an android device, you can decode the position reports. There's an app in the play store that I believe will do all this and feed positions into Avare: https://play.google.com/store/apps/deta ... Avare.ADSB

Getting the 978 MHz is a little trickier (has NOTAMs, weather, etc.) and I don't think anyone has been very successful with the cheap SDR sticks yet. I have done it with a HackRF, but haven't fed the data to a tablet yet.
