Seeking Unstarted or Barely Started 2 Place Sonex Kit

Postby iweissman » Sat Sep 13, 2014 3:01 pm

All

We are seeking a two place Sonex Aircraft to build with the inner city youth of Camden NJ. Our goal is to have our young people build an aircraft which they can eventually take flight lessons in.

The program UrbanAviators, a collaboration of UrbanPromise and the Camden Youth Aviation Program seeks to enhance and enrich the STEM learning experience of Camden’s inner-city youth through the vehicle of aviation. Using aviation related activities including teaching the principles of flight, aircraft design and the actual construction of an aircraft kit, we will link STEM subject matter with hands-on experience. In this fashion we plan to show how STEM is integral to the skills necessary for problem solving in our high tech world.

We are also talking with Rowan University’s College of Education about having one of their faculty or graduate students work with us to correlate the skills and knowledges learned as part of the building project to the Common Core Curriculum Standards so that the students can gain school credit for working on the project.

We are interested in talking with anyone who would be willing to donate either an un-started or barely started 2 place Sonex Aircraft kit for our program which is located in Camden NJ.

If you have a kit that you would be willing to donate or have any questions about the information in this post, please contact Ira Weissman at camdenyouthaviation@live.com or 856-3547-0173.

The Camden Youth Aviation Program tries to show the young people of Camden and Southern NJ all aspects of aviation and that there is more to life than what they see in their neighborhoods. Also by introducing them to aviation, we are hoping to give them something to dream about and to inspire them to rise above the limits of their environment. The program is open to all Camden and Southern NJ youth who are interested in aviation. Participation in the Camden Youth Aviation Program is not limited to any one group or organization, but welcomes all young people who are interested in aviation. The Camden Youth Aviation Program was established under the auspices of the former Camden Police Foundation and the Diocese of Camden's Community Relations Advisory Board. The Camden Youth Aviation Program is incorporated as a Non-Profit Corporation in the State of NJ and has submitted its paperwork to the IRS to become certified as a 501(c)3 organization.

Since its inception in September 2010, the Camden Youth Aviation Program has had a number of successful activities. Partnering with the Catholic Partnership Schools, Camden City Office of Youth Services, the Camden Police Cadet Academy, Big Brothers-Big Sisters of Camden County and the Boys and Girls Clubs of Camden, the Camden Youth Aviation Program has:

• Three of the Catholic Partnership Schools middle schools doing an Aviation Adventure club which uses aviation to teach young people about the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) principles.
• Done a basics of aviation class at one of Camden’s youth centers for approximately 10 youngsters ages 7 to 11.
• Had a ground school course given by a Certified Flight Instructor for 8 young people.
• Had the Tuskegee Airmen speak to our young people numerous times.
• Toured Philadelphia Airport five times both inside the terminal and onto the tarmac.
• Had the youngsters visit the Air Victory Museum (http://www.airvictorymuseum.com) and Pine Barons R\C Club.
• Had 10 youngsters participate in the 2012-2013 International Aviation Art Contest.
• Taken 14 youngsters to the McGuire AFB 2014 Airshow.
• Had one young person attend the Tuskegee Airmen\Hampton University STEM Summer Camp

Photos of what we have done can be seen on the Camden Youth Aviation Program Facebook page by clicking on Posts To Page in the left hand column.

Sincerely,
