Radio Noise Question

Hi Folks

I am getting some radio noise and just wanted to get your thoughts. On the ground while I am taxiing around, everything is fine but when I take off all of a sudden there is way too much noise on the radio making it very hard to hear. The problem started after the first couple of flights

I am using FL760 and Flightcom 403 intercom combination. I also noticed that this noise seems to go away if I change the headset between David Clark or ASA one.

My guess is that it seems to be related to engine noise but any ideas on why switching headsets would make such a significant different

Any other thoughts?

Cheers
Amit

That sounds a lot like a grounding issue....I'd be looking for a loose wire or intermittent connection....

Hi Amit,

We have identical set-ups except for the Flightcom 403. I also had noise using a passive set of David Clarks. Problem wasn't bad on the ground but in flight it was too much.

For me the problem was engine noise, and it was coming through the mic. I thought to go into the radio and turn the mic gain down but a friend that works on this stuff (he did communications for a recent President) tested my radio and antenna. The modulation and output was excellent. I then borrowed an older set of Lightspeed ANR headphones and the noise problem was much less.

I took a leap of faith and bought a set of Clarity Aloft and I was amazed at not only the reduction in noise but the reported clarity of my transmitted communications. Takes a bit longer to put the C/A headphones on but I can wear a full brim hat in flight and if I leave the hat off I don't mess up my silver locks! LOL!

Dunno if this helps ...
