Renters / Non-Owned Aircraft Insurance

Hello,

I'm working on my Sports pilot license and I was wondering what you guys think about the 'Renters / Non-Owned Aircraft Insurance". I'm renting a Cessna 162 with instructor and I'm planning to buy a Sonex when done.

-Did you guys buy the additional protection during training? (I have $5,000 deductible with my flight training program)
-If yes how much?
-Any suggested insurer/company?

It is best to have your own renters. The other insurance company will come after you even after you pay the 5000.

Had that happen to a friend who paid the deductible and the insurance company of the plane owner wanted to try and try and collect the rest of the cost.

The owner came to his defense and stood up the the insurance co. so in the end they did not take him to court.

I used Avemco when I was in a flying club and renting. Having a policy in your name protects you better. And your insurance company will defend you. Other peoples insurance companies will try to collect from you.
I think I paid $500/year for renters coverage. Zero deductible. But that was a few years ago. Its worth it when flying others airplanes. So much can happen that is real expensive.

I asked the owner what he valued his plane at and bought a renters police from AOPA. It was 20.000/500,000 and cost just a few hundred dollars, less than $500.
