Keyless drill pres chuck

Postby Mike Johnson » Thu Mar 27, 2014 4:54 pm

Hi guys. I just wanted to share some info on a new chuck I bought for the drill press. I had some runout issues and they were caused by not only too big a chuck but a very poorly made one. I had originally ordered a Rohm chuck that is made in Germany but had buyers remorse after laying out over a $100 dollars. So I returned it.

Instead, I purchased a Chinese knock off keyless chuck as well as a new arbor. I ordered both from Amazon and it arrived today. The drill chuck was $35 and the arbor was $6. Everything from the boxing to the fit and finish is over the top spectacular, in fact, I can't hardly believe this was only $35. It's heavy as heck and the quality of the final product is amazing. I drilled a few holes and it worked perfect. I put a dial indicator on it with a #40 drill bit and the runout was barely .001". Not to shabby, problem solved!

My drill press is a 17" JET but i'm pretty sure many of the smaller drill presses still have removable arbors. Anyhow, if you ever have an issue with your drill I thought you might want to know about this. Not only does it work well but going keyless was a real treat also.

The chuck is called a DCK-1/32 - 1/2". I'm not sure who makes it  but the style is called a "Harvest".

The forum is not letting me upload photos because of the file size so here is a link to my Sonex building page that has 4 photos.
