iPad Question

Hi Guys,

Guardian Avionics flush mount

I'll look at the Guardian and consider an air source.

I would like to have the iPad for backup navigation in the event of a total electrical failure so I suppose WiFi + cellular is the correct answer. The guys I'll be working with are "distributors" for Dynon so I will have to see what the preferred ADSB source is for Dynon systems.

I have always built with basic panels so glass, ADSB, ... is going to be a whole new adventure.

I forgot to mention. I have a Guardian IPad mini mount with the 12v Guardian cooling blower in perfect condition that I won't be using in the 7. I bought the Guardian 10.2-inch mount and blower for the new build.

The Mini mount and blower are $200 plus shipping from Guardian. If anyone wants this one I will sell this for $130 including shipping to the lower 48.

Only the cellular versions have the GPS built in, so if you want to show updated positioning, hot spotting from a phone wont achieve that unless it's the cellular version.

Unless you're using the ipad for ground-based navigation (i.e. in a car), GPS on the ipad isn't essential. Whatever your ADS-B-in receiver is, it's going to feed GPS data (and weather and traffic and the other goodies via either a bluetooth or wifi connection) to the ipad/Foreflight in-flight. The only time you may need cell/hotspot data is while on the ground.

Yes you will need to keep your iPad cool or put up with the occasional "black out".

On my last aircraft, I went to the trouble of fitting a dedicated mini eyeball vent just to keep the iPad cool - worked well. I found out later that keeping the iPad on charge all during the flight adds to the heat load. Might have been cheaper to just use the charger when needed.

Yea, 2 things (besides being in direct sunlight) can make the ipad overheat.... leaving the screen on 100% of the time, and constantly charging it.

I have found that starting with a fully charged iPad battery and connecting it to ship's power keeps it more cool, because the iPad's battery is neither being charged (as it is already fully charged) or providing the power to operate the iPad. Either being charged or providing power to operate the iPad results in the battery getting warm.
