Transition flying

Postby 1labelloj » Sat Jul 07, 2018 11:06 pm

I need some help finding transition flying/training opportunities. I am nearing completion of a Waiex tailwheel with and Aerovee 80 hp engine. I am in Richmond VA but would pretty much go anywhere I need to take advantage of transition opportunities. I have 400 plus hours in Cessna 150, 172, 182 and Diamond DA40. But only 14 hours of tailwheel time in a Citabria and a Piper Cub.

Can you direct me to someone who can help?

I was recently in a similar situation. What I did was (a) get current and comfortable in again in a tailwheel Champ (2-3 hours total), then (b) took a transition training course in an RV-12 (5 hours) — less than a week before first flight in my Sonex, so the training experience was still fresh.

Doing this, I felt ready to do the first flight, and things went off without a hitch. I used Plane Guys in Waupaca, WI for the RV-12 training.

One guy’s experience. Good luck!

Thanks for your advice. If I don't connect with a Sonex owner then I will certainly do at least that. But have my fingers crossed for a Sonex owner to step up.
