I know this isn't exactly what you asked; but keep in mind that a lot of GA airplanes that benefit from VGs (like your run-of-the-mill Cessna) use NACA 4-digit airfoils. These come from a time before laminar-flow airfoils were really investigated or considered. By contrast, the Sonex wing uses a NACA 6-series airfoil; which is designed to have at least partial laminar flow over the wing. Given the general waviness of a metal wing and the rivet heads, its unlikely that laminar flow extends back very far on the wing (chord-wise); but regardless, the wing is of a different design and may react quite differently to VGs (or at the very least need them in a much different place on the wing) compared to many common GA airfoils.
