Homebuilt Aircraft AD Compliance

Greetings All,

I'm hoping to call the FSDO in the next few days to schedule my inspection and as I complete the paperwork I've come up with a question. FAA form 8130-6 has a block where you're supposed to state the most recent AD compliance number you've checked to ensure all AD's have been checked.

On this website: http://home.provide.net/~pratt1/ambuilt/ad.htm it says the FAA has never issued an AD on an Experimental airframe, so the only applicable AD's on Homebuilts would be components that are or were certified (props, engines, starters, etc.). On a Sonex/Waiex with an Aerovee and the Sonex-recommended Sensenich prop, I can't think of anything on the plane that is certified.

So, for those that have a flying airplane, what did you put in that box in the form? I can see either a N/A or just putting the most recent actual AD number, even though none are applicable. Thoughts?

Mike, I cannot recall for sure what I put but "N/A" will probably work.

Your FAA inspector actually submits the form (I believe) and you can discuss it with him or her.

I'm fairly certain that you don't want to put any type of AD number in there because none are indeed applicable.

EDIT...Hopefully this is not your first contact with the FSDO as sometimes there are months-long waits for inspections... :shock:

How many of you used the FAA and how many used a DAR for the inspection?

On our first homebuilt we went through the local FSDO and had an FAA inspector do the inspection. It turned out to be mostly a paperwork check as he only looked at the plane for about 5 minutes. I'm planning on the same thing with the Waiex.

Kip... I've been in contact with them previously but didn't schedule my inspection. I'm waiting to hear from them for my actual inspection but they normally only take a week or two. I hope that still holds true as I'm out on the road all next week but around the week after.

Cool. I had to throw the caution out there as I have heard some nightmare stories withe regards to wait times. My FAA guy came out with about three days notice but he is a homebuilder... :D

When the A&P does my annual inspection he checks ADs on my altimeter.
