SCOTCHBRITE WHEEL - SUBSTITUTE?

SCOTCHBRITE WHEEL - SUBSTITUTE?

Postby AlFromNY » Tue Nov 07, 2023 1:31 pm

I have reviewed the homebuilder's help video for building the Sonex tail kit. It recommends a scotchbrite wheel to debut the parts. I'm having a lotta trouble finding one for my 1/2 hp sears bench grinder.
DOES ANYONE KNOW WHAT WOULD BE A GOOD SUBSTITUTE for scotchbrite to debut the parts?

Thanks,

If you have a 1" belt sander then non-woven abrasive belts work awesome. They are essentially scotchbrite on a sanding belt. I scratchbuilt my whole sonex using them. You used to only be able to buy them from Mcmaster Carr but Amazon and other places now carry them. They aren't super cheap at $10 each but they also last quite a long time. I went through maybe 7 or 8 while scratch building. I imagine that one 2 or 3 would be needed if building from a kit.

If you don't have a 1" belt sander I also highly recommend also getting one regardless. If you lift the part up off the table and use the belt where it doesn't have a backing plate behind it when sanding you can get into tight corners to sand and polish. The one in the link below from harbor freight goes on sale regularly for under $50 (or search for coupons if not on sale).

THANKS, KMACHT. I think I have a belt sander . . .somewhere . . . will look for it and see about the woven abrasive belt.

Bob Oz - I'm having trouble finding one that will fit my 6" bench grinder; the disc on there now is 6x3/4x1/2 and I don't think I'll be able to use a 6x1x1/2 because there is only 1" of thread on the end of the shaft the disc attaches to. But I'm still looking.

I bought mine from Vans in 1990. I'm really due for a new one.

3M shows several 1/2" and 3/4" scotch brite wheels on their website. Contact them. You will probably need a bushing for the shat diameter (1" to 1/2").

Bryan
That's ungodly expensive.

McMaster-Carr also has generic scotch brite wheels. Great company to deal with.

Exactly what I thought in 1990. Here it is 33 years later and I need another already. It's one of my favorite tools.
