3rd Builder - Sonex 1106

Postby Mapleshade » Fri Jul 16, 2021 8:47 am

Morning Folks,
After 12 years of peeking in the windows I was able to purchase a 90% complete kit. Aerovee was assembled in 2010, never started (never had oil) and planning to do a bit of a tear down to satisfy myself. Planning to swap out the nikasil cylinders and possibly upgrade to the turbo. Prior owners had done a fantastic job so far, very detailed wiring work. Has a Dynon FlightDEK-D180 and Garmin 296 on the panel along with the usual bits. EFIS monitoring, Servos, cabin heat muffler (may be forced to lose when going to Turbo). Looking forward to interacting with everyone and getting this unit up and flying!

Cheers,

-e

Morning John,
I am based out of CNH (Claremont) in a 1954 Skyhawk 172 club w/5 members. The Sonex is currently in my garage to be worked on during the winter.

Morning again Johns,
I would like to stop in and see yours when you have a moment. I've eventually got enough room in the garage to finish the work, just putting in storage to keep things up and out of the way. Just looking at all the wiring, knowing I am going to remove the Aerovee to work on it, it starts to feel a little overwhelming. So I am working on taking small bites, making checklists, setting priorities.

After owning it for 1.5 years, the last two weeks have been finally getting started. Got the wings stored overhead and out of the way. Removed the 80% complete panel so I can bench test it and do my own wiring diagram/documentation. Current plan is work from the tail and go forward. This weekend installed the seat so that I could sit in it with the canopy closed (temporary cushions). Less head room than I expected but workable.
Planning and documentation will keep me busy for a bit.
