Re: Complete Electrical Failure In-Flight

Mike I believe we might not be reading the schematic the same way. The wire the 20A fuse is on seems to be the main wire that is carring all the load (current not voltage) to the main-"buss". As stated by someone else, it is questionable if the 20 amp fuse is needed by argument can be mad...

Re: Complete Electrical Failure In-Flight

The wire from the master switch to the master contactor should not need to be a heavy wire. It's carrying very little voltage. It just energizes the master contactor post that closes the continuous high voltage circuit. That higher voltage never passes through the wire to the mater switch, so there ...

Re: Verifying the AeroVee Secondary Ignition Timing

Mike, I typically connected to the #4 plug wire. I prefer the right side because the starter is not in the way of the marks I made, as shown in the pictures earlier in the thread. I think I preferred the front cylinders because of ease of access for the inductive timing light pickup. But because my...

Re: Verifying the AeroVee Secondary Ignition Timing

Hi Mike, I probably shouldn't say anything since I don't have an AeroVee. But, I will say this: Some folks (Including Scott Casler of Hummel Engines) number the cylinders according to firing order. Looking from above and behind the engine that numbering is illustrated below. Cyl3|||||||Cyl1 Cyl4|||...

Re: Verifying the AeroVee Secondary Ignition Timing

Its pretty straight forward. Put a mark on the flywheel and case corresponding to 28 BTDC. The engine manual shows you how to locate this. I used a silver sharpie. I put mine around the 2 o'clock position looking in from the rear. I'll post a picture tomorrow when I pull the cowl for the oil change...

Re: Spins

Yeah, for whatever reason, spins to the left go fast and furious (in a good way, not a bad way), but to the right tend to be sluggish. I've done 7 spins max. My spin video did 5 rotations (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gPzQ3Ruq8LY). Spins and recoveries are very straight forward in a Sonex, but as...

Sonex tires?

I've been using the Chan Shin 11 x 4.00 x 5 tires for the past 10 years. They don't seem to be available anymore. What are others using these days?

Re: Torquing the gland nut

A trip down memory lane - this was our first method for torquing the gland nut. Weighed Adam, marked the spot on the wrench where to stand, and I reacted the torque standing on the half prop. First time torquing gland nut.png That's pretty much what I did. 2x8 with holes to grab the prop hub bolts....

Re: Sonex Builders BBQ at Oshkosh 2024

I've been just south of OSH since June 21, and you sure can't put any stock in the weather forecasts here in the summer!! The weather forecasts LITERALLY change every couple of hours. It's an "unsettled" atmosphere here, so it's not easy to predict. So good or bad, don't put too much stock...

Re: Is this a crack in my Cylinder head?

Those cracks are VERY common in VW heads. It's a design flaw from its inception by VW way back when:
