It seems unlikly that Sonex are going to provide a Ring Mount modification kit for Legacy/Rotax owners (there are just too few of us)

Given all the actual and potential (future) problems, that are caused by the incompatibility between Rotax 912's (particularly the ULS) bed mount system, I think Sonex could/should at the very least, provide plans to Legacy owner's for the installation of a Rotax Ring Mount.

The future problems could include engine frame cracking , loss of engine, loss of life.

Sounds like another product for Cooper Aviation. If I'm not mistaken, he does all their welding already.

Great idea - Would casey come up with the plans or Sonex?
Are we talking kit or just plans?
I best start looking for that preloved Ring Mount in good condition.

A couple of photos of where I have got to with this ring mounted rotax install in the sonerai.

So far have built an engine mount, a bracket for the radiator and oil cooler, exhaust with muffler, airbox with filter, and an air inlet / carb heat, selector valve. There is still plenty of work to do but I have a Sonex to fly in the meantime so there is no rush.

I'll see how this sonerai works out. I may even convert the sonex to a rotax when this is done.

Very very nice install.

Unfortunatly does not have a lot of application to Sonex Legacy (my aircraft) as I will have to modify the all in one engine & undercarriage frame .

I would like to see photos from those intrepid/clever people, who have grafted a Rotax Ring Mount onto a Sonex Legacy or B model

Working on it. Based on the construction from the guy from Argentina.

Unfortunately that is a fact of life skippy. With the A model there are multiple engine mounts. Aerovee, jab 2200, jab 3300 and now rotax bed mount. There will not be a single solution to address modifying any of these mounts to fit a rotax ring mount. If I go down this path with my sonex I would be modifying a 3300 mount which would also be of no use to you.

I might be corrected, but I think the undercarraige and the fuselage fixing point are the only common parts which would be of any use for a rotax ring mount conversion. These are good starting points, but thats all. So apart from the undercarraige frame you are really looking at a new mount. Not impossible, but there is no easy fix.

I would in a Sonex and am in the Sonerai, offsetting the engine angles for P factor to the right and up slightly. I have gone with 1.5 deg to the right and 1 deg up. The offset was the actual starting point datum of my sonerai mount design.

sonex892,

I am a fan of Robin Austin of Sonerai /Rotax 912ULS World Record fame. What he has done with his first, only slightly modified Sonerai and now a much modified second version is truly spectacular. If you can get some advice from Robin, it may save you reinventing the wheel he has already so successfully developed-
