Has anyone installed electric elevator trim on their Onex? If so, did you use a tab on the back of the elevator or cut a recessed one as on the VR6? I've installed the tab on the trailing edge of the elevator but I really don't care for the appearance. I asked Sonex and got the expected response (Dial a speed). I have it but I don't want to install it I want electric trim.
You will have very little use for electric elevator trim on a Onex. It isn't worth the time and work to put it in. I mounted the Sonex trim vertical on the front of the spar on the left so I can rotate it with my palm. I don't trim until at cruise altitude and speed. Then trim hands off. It varies a little depending on the amount of fuel you have. If you fly long enough to burn 4 or 5 gal. you may want to trim again. It only takes a couple of quarter turns. I don't trim on landing. The stick loads are so light you don't need it. Don't touch it again till the next flight. 350 hours and flying.
I think every airplane needs pitch trim. Any slight speed change and it usually needs to be re-trimmed. I tend to NOT re-trim for the pattern as I like the feedback vs airspeed. Its also safer on a go-around. I had a 'Dial a speed' or whatever they call it and just didn't like the idea. I put a small trim tab on the elevator and a lever on the cockpit. The first lever didn't work out. I couldn't get the friction just right and it was too sensitive. I also didn't care for the location. I moved it and went to a different lever. After a little adjusting, it works well. Its easy to find and quick to adjust.
