Fire Extinguishers

Postby BRS » Sun Sep 19, 2021 11:34 pm

What are your thoughts on having / not-having a fire extinguisher on board? Why do you think one is needed / not-needed?

For those who do have a fire extinguisher, what models have you liked the best in your sonex?

I'm on the fence about getting one and want some collective food-for-thought.

I’m not so sure about discharging one in the cockpit during flight, but I would certainly want a halon one within arms reach if I ended up trapped in the plane after an accident. Or, if there was a fire during startup, perhaps from over rich. It would be good to be able to hop out and have some chance to save the plane.

Avoid Powder. The powder type gets everywhere, into seams and joints and reacts with the aluminum structure to cause long term and fatal corrosion. PLUS it creates instant IFR in the cockpit - which you might not want if you are in the air.

While you might take the view that you would have other things to worry about in a fire - a successful knock down of a minor electrical fire that leaves the plane repairable - you want Halon. The powder just wrote the plane off long term.
