Oil return hose

Postby mike.smith » Sun Nov 10, 2013 11:08 pm

I made an air/oil separator that also returns oil to the valve cover. The 2 final connections I need to make forces a U-turn between two fittings (one at the a/o separator; one at the valve cover). Both are barbed fittings that take a 1/2" ID hose. Because of the very short U-turn I can't use one of the fat oil line hoses. I need something that is thin walled and flexible, but can take the heat of some hot oil returning to the valve cover. It's really just the oil vapor from the crankcase vent, but the fitting in the valve cover will get as warm as the valve cover does.

Anyone have any thoughts on a thin wall, flexible tubing that can take the temperatures generated around the valve cover? I found things like these:

but I don't want to put something in there that may melt or not be compatible with oil.

Mike,
Rather than use a hose, can you use a simple piece of steel tubing bent to make the "U"? Either flare it to meet your present fittings (without the barbs) or put a bead near the end and use a small bit of rubber hose (with clamps) to connect the "U" to the barbed ends. Just an idea.

Any of those should work. I use polyurethane tubing and I think my friend Bob uses black automotive fuel line. I doubt that the temps seen exceed 200 degrees.
