The thread linked below is pretty long and not all applies to the aerovee but the very first post has some great diagrams showing how the vw oil system works and what the two case valves do at different temperature and pressures.

Beware! You have to do some fairly drastic mods for return oil if you're going "full flow" oil filter. If not then no worries.
