Flight Data Viewer for MGL Devices

Postby XenosN42 » Mon Jul 30, 2018 3:04 pm

Hello to all Sonex builders/pilots that use a MGL Avionics system,

Eight years ago I first flew my Xenos motor glider which used a MGL Enigma EFIS. Four years ago I finished my OneX with has a MGL Explorer iEFIS. Early on I wanted to see and use, in some productive way, the data which is recorded by the MGL black box feature. I decided to write an application to satisfy that goal.

Recently I’ve made that application available to other MGL users. The best way to learn about the application’s features is to view the short video demonstration on the web site’s home page.

http://www.JASFlyer.com

Use the email link on the website’s ‘contact’ page to ask me any questions. However, if you have questions that you think might be of special interest to Sonex builders post them here.

Thanks!

Michael

Wow, nifty software. I really should have spent more money on my avionics.

I installed it and it has an amazing array of data and options! I can even see my flight overlaid on Google Earth. A couple of my Extreme Mini data points don't appear to be getting picked up, but Mike is looking into that. More videos are promised to show how to use the data to find things like Vx and Vy.

Hi,

I received a request from a potential 'Flight Data Viewer' user asking what data can be displayed in the application. I created a web page which shows the data:

I'm having a problem setting up my Enigma to record data. I go into the menu and try to create the enigma.rec file, but
the Enigma locks up. The manual isn't much help. What am I missing?

Hi Rick,

I have a series of questions, and the answers may help to resolve your problem. If you contact Matt Liknaitzky at MGL support I’m sure he’ll ask similar questions. You can contact him at: https://mglavionics.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/requests/new If you don’t know an answer we can come back to it later, but the most important questions are listed first.

Is the SD card write protected?
Can you read and write files to the SD card when it is inserted into your computer?
Who is the manufacturer of the SD card? There are some cheap brands out there that don’t work well. A 2GB SanDisk has worked well for me.
What is the storage capacity of the SD card?
What is the version # of your Enigma firmware?
Are you trying to create a 50MB or 10MB ‘Enigma.rec’ file? I only recommend the 10MB file. It’s more than large enough to get the job done.

Thanks for replying Michael, I was using a 16gb sd card, I forget the brand name. I'm going to the airport today
and will try using the original 2 gb Apacer card that came with the Enigma. I'll report back with the results.

Thanks!

The original 2 gb card worked. It comes up with a card fail error sometimes but when the Enigma recognized the card on power up,
I was able to create the 10 mb .rec file. I found another 2 gb card in an old camera and set it up for the Enigma and it worked as
well.

The stores around here only sell 32 and up sd cards, so it helps to hang on to old junk......it came in handy, lol.

Thanks for your help Michael.

I think you will find that camera shops still have 2gb cards. Not cheap tho.
