Horizontal split cowl on Legacy Sonex

Hey everyone

I am interested in hearing how people secured and latched their new horizontal split cowling on a legacy Sonex. Photos would really help

Just prepping to convert engines and ordered a new cowling....

I used piano hinges at the firewall just like the original and Skybolt 1/4 turn locks across the top and around the horizontal split. Works pretty well but the fit at the prop is pretty tight and hard to line up, it may have been better to just put in nut plates and screws there. Nut plates and screws would have worked everywhere instead of the Skybolts but would have added a lot of time to the process of mounting or removing the top half.

I have ended up going for simple screws and nut plates. I did buy camlocs, but I worried about losing one and then being difficult to replace. My cowling on an old Jabiru SK is secured with screws and it is no big deal to remove or replace the cowl.

Currently involved with the factory horizontal cowl and have a question.

It looks like the top 2 hinge lugs (just under the upper engine mounts) on the sides of the firewall are just there for show. It seems that the pins could be installed from the top down if those two lugs were removed, eliminating the notches at the bottom. I have no experience installing or removing a cowl, but it would appear easier to accomplish the task if the pins could be installed from the top. Are those lugs of any importance down the road?
