Fairings

Postby Onex107 » Tue Aug 08, 2017 8:58 pm

Hey guys, I'm thinking about adding gap seals to my Onex rudder and elevators. Have any of you done that and if you did, what method did you use to attach the gap seal? What thickness did you use? Did you realize any improvement to your flight? Also, as long as we are talking fairings, have you faired the wing fuselage joint?

There was a general discussion about this a few months ago. See http://www.sonexbuilders.net/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=3542&hilit=gap+seal. I'd take special note of Steve Moody's post on that thread, where he described a suitable testing regime. If you do go ahead and try gap seals I'm sure plenty of us would be interested in learning of your test results.

I started to do some testing, then my condition inspection and vacation got in the way:

I hope to get out to do a number of tests over the next few weeks. From the video the fairings do certainly cut down on some of the drag, but no idea yet if there are any measurable gains.
