Wing Instillation

I just purchased a flying Sonex with only 1 hour on it, So I had to trailer it home. The Problem I am having installing the wing is to get the Spar bolts holes to line up. Does anyone have any tips for doing this?

i made a set of taper pins from 3/8" carriage bolts. I used a bench grinder to taper them down.

I could never get the wings lined up perfectly enough for the bolts to go in, but I can get the wings to line up close enough so that I could get the taper pins to go in and they slide in and get the wings completely lined up.

I drive the taper pins in from forward of the spars, then I put in the bolts from aft of the spar and they drive out the taper pins.

Sonex has recommended trailer hitch pins instead of the bolts. That's what I use.

Also, if you have glider pilot friends, ask them to help. Rigging wings is part of that dance.

you need to have two helpers that can lift the wing tips a little while you insert the bolts. Sitting in the spar box the tips drop a fraction of an inch which is enough to allow the holes to miss-align.

Consider installing only the right wing first and starting the pins from the back. Install the right fuse pin first. Look in the left wing spar box to verify the pins are not inserted too much then install the left wing setting the left side pin first then the right.

Are you trying to do it with the wing root rubber trim in place? I need to remove the h trim then put it back on after the bolts are in.

I may have to try that next time. I did try to lean the mixture a bit, but not a bunch. I don't usually just try to land, fuel, and go, but I'm expecting to fly from Dayton to Phoenix next summer, and I really don't want to add 7 hours just for extra time at refueling stops to cool off. I want to make sure I can stop, stretch my legs, hit the restroom, refuel, and continue on.
