Cool looking Sonex

Postby rizzz » Sun Jun 04, 2017 7:24 pm

We had our local SAAA (Aust. EAA) chapter meeting here a few weeks ago at a group of 5 building 2 Sonex’s.
They’ve just about completed installation of a Todd’s canopy on one of them which I thought looked very cool.
They kept the canopy as a single piece to do away with the windscreen bow.
The canopy is a side tip and they’ve done some clever work with the latch mechanism to make sure it’s firmly attached on all sides when locked.
They’ve also installed warning lights on the panel to indicate proper closure of the canopy, anyway, here are some pictures:

That is absolutely beautiful! I love Todd's Canopies, I heard that he recently passed away, such a shame.

I'd pay money for one of those though!

Yeah, unfortunately Todd Silver died in a plane crash June last year, tragically his mother, daughter and son were also on board with his daughter being the only survivor.
The business was for sale for a while but it seems nobody has taken up the offer, probably the skills and knowledge required are pretty unique.

Perhaps there are still some unused Todd's canopies floating out there.

Todd Silver's canopy business did not pass away with him. https://www.aerocanopy.com/ is the new owner, Lance Logan's business that is the same as Todd's. I was looking at the site, but no joy for Sonex. I've sent a message to see if he can still manufacture them. I'll let everyone know. Would love to have one.

Glad to know that business still exists, will add it to my file. When I got my Todd's canopy, about 7 years ago, it was quite long and looked like it might have been initially made for a single wide tandem aircraft, so they might still be making it and not know it. (Mine is canopy only, not the even larger one piece canopy plus windscreen that one cut into two parts.)
