Sonex went down this morning in Leesburg Virginia, pretty sure this one was Corvair powered

WASHINGTON — A portion of Sycolin Road has been closed after a small aircraft crash-landed at the edge of the Leesburg Executive Airport property in Virginia Saturday morning.

The road was closed in both directions between Shreve Mill Road and Battlefield Parkway as of 11:45 a.m. for the investigation.

The plane — identified by Virginia State police as a one-seat Sonex experimental aircraft — went down near 19976 Sycolin Road around 9:20 a.m., officials said.

Glad the pilot is okay. I believe that is S/N 1470, std gear, plans built with a corvair engine. First flight was June, 2014.

Hi all,
First, glad to hear joe wasnt injured. Sorry to see all his hard work in an accident. Hopefully not too much damage, and he can get it back together and flying soon. Possibly was in phase 1 testing? FAA reg. Shows cert. Date march 10 2017. Dont know if joe was a poster on here.
One item i've been thinking about is the canopy, and in this accident like many other sonex accidents, , the plexi (sonexplex or poly carbonate) seems to break easily. Have been wondering if a lexan bubble could be blown by sonex's vendor. Cost would be higher, prob. But more resistant to damage and cracking. More robust, and would protect occupants in the event of a crash. The down side i see is egress in an accident. Either from the inside , even if you had some type of tool to help cut your way out. Or for first responders to get you out. Lexan scratches more easily also.
What do you all think? Any thoughts?
