Inter-Cylinder Baffles

Postby lpaaruule » Sat Sep 10, 2016 7:45 pm

I can't seem to locate the inter-cylinder baffles. At first I thought they were missing from the Sonex firewall forward kit, but now I'm thinking they were supposed to come with the engine. I can't find them on either packing list though.

Does someone know where I'm supposed to get these? I'm thinking of making them, but I'm not sure about the size judging from the picture. Anyone know the dimensions?

Thanks

I assume you mean the black "super tin" that goes on the underside of each pair of cylinders? Assuming you are referring to a VW engine it's part of the kit. And assuming that's what you mean, it's a simple yet complex/compound piece. I've never heard of anyone making one. It has to be "right" or it won't work.

I'm referring to the Jabiru 3300. I've heard of people calling them "bat wings", but not "super tin"; maybe they are the same thing.

They sure don't look very complex, but I'll buy them if I need to.

Can't help you on the Jab. I've got the VW. I have my Forum link set up to go to current topics, so every new post comes up when I log on, regardless of which forum index it's in. I didn't see the questions was in the "Jabiru" index.

In the Sonex jabiru firewall forward manual, there are templates to make them, very easy.

Assuming we are talking about the stainless steel inter cylinder bat wings: Think I saw something about Jabiru after moving them from top of cylinders (where did not make much sense) to bottom, has eliminated them. (Bad move in my book) The thin steel cylinders can develop localized hot spots very quickly (Steel in nowhere near as conductive as aluminum.) hot enough that oil can lose its lubrication ability leaving cylinder walls scored.

Might get better info posting your question on the Jabiru / CAMit website.

Paul, they are not from Jabiru, they are in the Sonex plans when you buy their jabiru kit for the baffles and stuff. They just call out the templates and you make them from scrap.

Hi John.

I think you are referring to the lower baffle plates. There is a template for those is on page 20 of the Sonex manual. I've gone through it page by page and can't find the Inter-Cylinder baffle template.
