Modified canopy latch

Postby Sonex1517 » Sat Feb 06, 2016 10:24 pm

Does anyone have a drawing for a modified canopy latch? I am looking for a drawing that shows the canopy latch with a second notch to allow it to be locked open for taxi.

Robbie,

No drawing, but thats how I made mine, traced another set of latch slots lower down on a 2" x 2" angle. This gives about a 1.25" opening for the canopy when closed in the lower position.

I did the same as Scott with one exception. I made my secondary latch slot shorter so there is no way to inadvertently pin it and go fly that way. With the canopy latched in that intermediate position, there are also color markings indicating the "unsafe for flight" condition.

I believe you need to start with 1 x 3 angle to make this canopy latch. At least I had to. It works great.

If you put that second notch into the standard latch, you should extend and strengthen the longer registration pin so that if the canopy experiences a lifting gust, it will not back out of the notch, and fly open, and break. I speak from experience.

Does anyone have any leftover angle for this mod they would be willing to part with?

I see in the pictures of the "B" model on the factory site, the Waiex has the modified latch installed. Is this a new option? If so, will it retrofit to the legacy models? I can't find it in their web store.

They told me it would not fit legacy models.
