Factory Waiex down in Fond Du Lac, WI

Postby Fastcapy » Wed Aug 03, 2016 3:46 pm

The factory Waiex went down just off the FLD airport a little after noon today...

Both occupants were taken to the hospital with injuries. The passenger was airlifted to the area trauma center.

I hope they make a fast and full recovery. I'm glad to hear they were talking on the scene, it could have been a lot worse. I hate power lines and cell towers. :(

My friend Dave was taking transition training in that plane. I just got the call from his wife. He has a few broken ribs and a gash on his leg that needs stitches. I don't know which instructor was on board and what his status is, but the hospital said they did not get a second patient. I hope he's OK. We didn't get much information but it sounds like the engine lost power on take-off.

Dave drove out prior to Airventure and so has his car out there. He can't drive all the way back to Boston with broken ribs, so he is likely to take a commercial flight back and his wife will have to fly out to drive the car back. Unless anyone in the area wants to take a car trip to Boston :-)

I'll let you know more when I hear. Let's hope the instructor is OK, too.

I was told it was not Joe Norris.

Sounds like one was transported to the local hospital in fondy by ambulance and the other by helicopter to the trauma center in Neenah.

I suspected power loss because there are no lines really anywhere too close to the runway or extended runway centerline as they are buried in that area. The threshold is also a way back from the road. The wreckage is quite a bit south of the departure runway which led me to believe they tried to set it down on the road and clipped the lines.

Thoughts and prayers to all involved. My wife and I live in Chicago and can assist with car transport if needed. I have a second pilot and can get the car to O'hare, or possibly to Clevelend (family is there so we frequent it and are planning our next trip already)with ease. Send me a PM if we can be of assistance.

Thanks. We'll see what transpires in the next couple of days. Dave had to go into the OR to get the rather extensive leg stitches done, but his wife says he's out of the OR and doing OK.

Broken ribs are not fun and recovery is very painful. The leg gash is the least if his troubles. He may not be flying commercial for a few weeks either.

I hope the instructor is doing OK. Any word on him?
