Turbo flying

Postby Sonex1517 » Sat Mar 12, 2016 4:55 pm

Got 1.6 hours flight time today in my Turbo AeroVee (aka the "TurboVee") powered Sonex!

CHT's are all in the 320 Deg F range at an OAT of 64 Deg F - about 3000 MSL.

At 30" Manifold Pressure I saw 3200 RPM and 140-143MPH indicated on my GRT Mini (showed 135 on the steam gauge - neither one is calibrated) burning about 10.2 Gallons of 100LL in 1.6 hours.

That is about 6.4 GPH - I did not lean it out and ran it at 35" MP for a bit.

I *LOVE* my new Prince P tip propeller!!!

Google Earth plot of the flight. The end of the track is corrupted for some reason. (Unless my Sonex suddenly did 155,000 MPH)

Cool! I've flown out to freeport once in the C140, but a bit slower.

I was going to drop in today but the rain was lurking just to the south of ARR

Great to hear Robbie! I'm glad to hear the engine is running well.

I can't wait to see the airplane!

Robbie
This is off subject , but how do you like the GRT mini B EFIS? I have been flying my sonex the past 6 years with just the GRT EIS and thinking of upgrading my panel to include the mini B. Do you have any problems seeing the display while flying? I would continue to use the EIS for engine monitoring so the mini B would be dedicated to primary fight display.
Thanks
Jim

Hi Jim,

I love the Mini, but it does wash out in direct sunlight. The only time I have trouble seeing it is when the sun is directly behind me. It's still visible but definitely has a washout.

The Mini now also integrates to the GRT engine monitor.

Re: Turbo flying

Hello to all. Yesterday I started for the first time my turbo upgrade to N369UR. I got HIGH oil pressure (approx 85-90 PSI from idle to 1600 RPM at about 15 inches MP. Shut down after 4:40 Minutes. Tried to drain oil from crankcase w new filter system in place. NO LUCK no oil drain when I opened nut on the bottom. For you turbo guys...your thoughts??? I USUALLY had LOW oil pressure before....
Recommendations??? tried to follow ALL instructions faithfully but did the job alone and am NOT an AEROVEE builder..
Any help would be greatly appreciated.. Any one near Zepherhills FL????
