Dipping the Tank

On my plane I raised the tail until the cockpit rail was approximately level and marked the sight tube accordingly. It does vary somewhat in flight but is more than accurate enough to know what your fuel state is. I try to never go below 4 gals so that there is always a good "fudge factor" build in.

Hi Richo

Yes a stick does fit and go all the way to the bottom, no bending required. I calibrated a bit of half round timber it lives behind the seat and I dip before each flight.

How about a simple wooden yard stick? Seems it would be great. And easy to stow onboard.
Sometimes I swear I overthink things.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for all the info.. I cut a piece of pacific maple about 13mm x 13mm (1/2" x 1/2" for the metric challenged) and before the first flight last Saturday made a vixen file cut at each 10 litre fill point. (2.6US galls)
As reported it fits fine down the gullet, and I put a marker at the neck point as suggested when fully inserted. You can tell when it contacts the fuel strainer as there is a different feel to the tank edge... just don't push too hard!

Might revisit the tank marking idea later... it always seems extra dark under my panel as I have a 2" subpanel in the way. Seems easier to just dip in my case :)

Cheers
Tony
