Glad you figured it out--as frustrating as it is, I'm sure its nice for the problem to be something clear-cut. Do you feel like this is a satisfying explanation for the rough running also?

Michael,

When you reassemble your engine make sure your valve timing is spot on. If you camshaft gear alignment is not spot on with the crankshaft you will experience rough running very similar to what you show in your video. Good luck!

Yeah, at least I know.

It certainly does not explain the rough running.
Since the weekend I have checked the timing of the dual magneto but that all appears to be good.
The valve timing as Jake mentions below was correct as well, the dots on the crankshaft gear vs. camshaft did align. (I'm assuming that's what you mean Jake?)

It could be fuel as someone mentioned as well, the AeroCarb was installed with the #2 needle and initially set as per the instructions, but no adjustments done yet.

The other thing is spark plugs.
Mine were not new.
I found a set of 8 REL38B's on Ebay, they were sold in an "as new" condition but who knows with Ebay stuff.
The REL38B's have now been superseded by the REL37B so I will buy me a brand new set of those from spruce I think.

Just heard back from Marty at Great Plains.
It appears my mistake is "a common" one. That makes me feel a little better at least.

Don't be embarrassed, I have had HELL with those d@mn dowel pins, finally a link that was posted here solved it, to check alignment by checking the fit of the opposite center half bearing... I was amazed when several time I "thought" I had it right, then set the top half of the center bearing on it to discover that one of the pins was still not aligned!

I will attempt to find the previous post at repost here.

Got the engine all back together over the last week and last night I installed it back onto the plane.
I feel much better again now (even though this mistake cost me a bit of money again)

Michael,

I wish you the best of luck on your engine test run. We are rooting for you! I am sure this time it will run great. Your pictures look impressive. How many HP are you anticipating?
