Killed another engine!

Postby rbarber » Wed Dec 11, 2024 5:55 pm

All,

I don't know what to say. Somehow I managed to blow up another piston. The engine had just over 300 hours on it. Yes, I was airborne, still in climb out mode when it happened. Well within gliding distance of the runway (Thankful for that!).

This time, however, Jabiru stepped up and gave me another engine. Thank you very much Jabiru!

Report on the failure attached FYI.

Getting a refund on a bad aero engine is like getting your money back on a bad batch of shark repellent.

Being a grumpy old man ain't so bad...

On the other hand, it's just my opinion but, there seems to be 2 types of people on the FB Sonex group.
The first, and most numerous group is the Wannabe's. The second group is quite small and more focused on monetizing their 'secret sauce' than sharing information. When I have a question about anything Sonex, this is the place I go.

Hi all, robert, art,
First - robert good to see you made it back on the ground ok, and jabiru treated you well.

Art, yes, a small effort to sign in each time, but thats like any other group using this templete website.
Thanks always to Chris B. who started this site. This has been a wealth of info for tech stuff for our community, and has helped out many. Yes chris always takes donations to keep this website going.
Please donate, lets keep this alive. All chris asks for is a $5 donation or $10 yearly. A good deal.
If you dont wish to use a cc, youn can PM chris to send him a donation.

I do look at the facebook sonex site, never post there, not a big facebook user.

ive encountered lots of scam ads on facebook selling aviation stuff, im very careful to vet them, almost everytime is a scam. I use ebay, always received items. Use extreme caution buying anything off facebook.
I think alot of these scammers from overseas locations.

Also, we all getting older, maybe a little grumpy, comes with the gray hair.

Happy Holidays to all. Be safe.

I am mostly a silent lurker here, but I will say that I find this forum a much better source of more complete and reliable information because of successful builders who have posted extreme detail of their progress and sharing their learnings. Logging in for me is easy as I have my login creds pre-pop. I receive the digest every day without fail.

I am on the FB group, but take much of what is out there with a grain of salt.

Robert

Wow! So glad you came out of that on a runway and with a replacement engine!

My 3300 Gen 4 was in the same serial number range and Nick/Jabiru replaced the cylinders (and I believe the pistons) a couple of years ago under warranty. I shipped the engine to them at my cost - they covered the rest. I call that good customer service.

Nick helped me through this after I had issues at about the 100 hour point on my then new engine. My symptoms were low oil pressure after a flight, starting with when I did a power reduction to enter the pattern and dropping down near zero by the time I pulled off the runway.

Since then the engine has been trouble free. (I just tempted fate, I believe)

Great write up!

(Edited to clarify why they rebuilt my engine)
