Cracked K&N oil filter results in total loss of oil

Postby DCASonex » Mon Sep 26, 2016 8:52 am

Had a K & N oil filter # HP-1003, (the type with 1" hex spot welded on end) crack and dump all oil. Crack extended through and past three spots welds. Landed safely. Pattern of cracks suggests likely fatigue failure from oil pressure pulsation. This is second filter of this type where found crack at spot weld, first was only minor leak. Filter was on a CAMit 3300, maximum oil pressure seen after filter (galley port) was 55 PSI. (Note: This filter is not a type recommended by CAMit) Photos and details on Jab-CAMit forum.

Dave Koelzer had that exact same thing happen with the same filter back in December of 2002: http://n36sx.com/update/index.html

I've experimented with numerous oil filters on my 3300 and have settled on a few favorites. I'll run through my full list, below, with my notes and approximate price of filter.

My Preferred Filters:

1) Fram ExtraGuard XG4967 (Premium Brand) - Slightly-thicker housing. High performance filter media inside. Well constructed inside and works well. Good compromise of price and great performance. Buy at Walmart. $11

2) Royal Purple 10-2840 (Premium Brand) - Very thick-wall filter housing! Dual media filter inside (cotton-like filter media surrounded in a micro screen). At 25 hrs still looks pretty good (could probably go a lot longer than 25 hrs in service). Hard to find locally (sometimes Advance Auto), but can get from Amazon. $15

3) NAPA Gold 1394 - Jabiru USA's recommend filter. Likely a re-branded WIX Filter. Works well. Buy from Napa Auto or Amazon. $8

-----

Filters I tried but didn't care for:

Mobile 1 M1-103 (Premium Brand) - Medium housing. Seemed to do fine, although it looked unremarkable inside. Most expensive. $15

Bosch 3311- Regular (thin) housing. Plain filter media. Similar to Napa 1394 but looked "kinda cheap" inside. $5

K&N HP-1003 (Premium Brand) - Nut on canister never really helped tighten or loosen filter. Filter media inside looked unremarkable. $10

Purolator L14476 (or PER4476) - Thin housing. Plain filter media. $5

Baldwin B33- Thin housing. Plain filter media. $5

Fram PH4967 - Bottom-line Fram filter. Thin housing. Poorly constructed with cardboard filter media. Just felt cheap!. $4

Other Compatible Filters (Not tested yet):

Ryco Z386 (Factory Filter)
Wix 51394 (or 51360, 51395)
Valvoline V70
Mahle OC534
AC Delco PF1233
Walmart brand Super Tech 4967
Mobil 1 MO2821A
Amsoil SDF-10 (*Premium Brand)

Thanks for the info on oil filters. Will check into some of those. Want one that is not too restrictive so as to provide minimum back pressure as well as being strongly constructed. Just installed a NAPA (Wix) 1394 from local auto supply for now.

Found this website with specifications for various brands of filters most informative. Our filter size not tested, but close enough. Especially note: Micron rating, filter area, FLOW RATE (big range) and burst pressure.

Hi everyone. I’m trying to see what would be the best oil filter for my Jabiru 2200. It’s serial number 1137. Really don’t want to order It overseas so wondering what filter is better then Jabiru Oil Filter RYCO Z386 and easier to get either in North America. The previous owner has been using this one MAHLE Original OC 340 Oil Filter.

Thanks in advance
