Oil pump cover seal

When I got rid of my external filter, I put in a normal oil pump and I bought a Gene Berg 239 pressure relief cover. I've had lots of leakage from the pump since. Per the manual (IIRC) I put the cover onto the pump with no gasket, though there are gaskets for it. I am going to try adding the gasket. Wondering if anybody has experience or wisdom to share regarding sealing the oil pump.

Should I eliminate this leak, I am sure there are others to protect the belly of the airplane, so no worries there.

I just had a discovery. My oil pump bolts were a touch long. I don't think I had good clamping on the pump and cover.

Probably why the stock VW case comes with studs and nuts.

Yeah I can see that being better. I skipped the cover gasket and just used sealer. The original oil pump setup was fine. It had a thicker cover. Not sure how I missed that before.

The Aerovee manual says no gasket under the cover. That worked for me before, so I'm trying it again with my shortened bolts. If it doesn't work I'll use the cover gasket.

Be certain the plate is flat. One trick is to use some fine emory cloth on a sheet of glass to polish the surface of the cover.
