Discussion of the Aerovee kit engine.

Any AeroVee “Experts” South of Boston?

Postby sean44 » Tue Feb 28, 2023 10:44 pm

Going to be headed to look at a Sonex in Plymouth MA in early March. Any AP/IA’s with background working on AeroVees? or others who have built and worked with the 80hp model which this is. Not knowing the engine I’d be interested in learning more about it and maybe some testing I might be able to do while there to check the health of the engine.

Feel free to post here or PM.

Download the Aerovee manual here:
http://www.aeroconversions.com/support/manuals.html
It will tell you how to build one, plus maintenance requirements including the annual condition inspection.

Check out the Aerovee service bulletins. Verify they were completed and documented in the logbook.

It's a super simple engine. Easy to work on if you are so inclined. A major overhaul costs about twice as much as buying spark plugs for a Lycoming.

What else can you check? Compression, static RPM, and how it runs.

Thanks again Bryan -

Looked everything over in the manual and that will be a huge help.

Sean,

I'm at KUUU - Newport and it's a 20 min flight for me to come look. I'm not an AP or a Builder - but have a past life building lots of other life important things and I do my Condition Inspections under AP supervision. I'm pretty comfortable with my Sonex and the AeroVee.

DM me and we can trade contact info.

Also Mike Smith on here from 6B6 - Minuteman is a scratch builder. You might want to reach out to him.
