You will note from the great Plains web site that they will also put it together for you for the paltry sum of $550 including crating.It is also the lightest with the Nicasil cylinder upgrade.Great plains also has a 2300cc,for the same price if you just have to have 80HP.

Indeed,I really haven't taken a good look at the Hummel though a quick peruse of the site brought to my attention that the 2180cc 76hp choice can be had for $6200 built and test run.Thats $800 less than the Aerovee and you don't have to assemble it.Not a whole lot of info on the web site.eg;what type of prop hub/crank assembly does he use? . :geek:

Just my 2 cents. I think if a builder purchases an engine kit he shouldnt have to grind parts to get it together.

Joe ,I couldn't agree with you more.As I recall in Onexplans forum you posted pictures whereby you had to modify the motor mount for some reason.
Could you elaborate? Anything else that had to be modified?

I agreed with Joe when this topic first started, about grinding parts. Since then I have done more research and the process of relieving edges of pushrods and grinding away the spare flash on castings here and there is very typical when building a new motor from scratch. It actually doesn't scare me that much and does offer another avenue for seeing your airplane built the way you want it. It will still be a while before I purchase a motor, so my choice is not fixed, but I will probably go with the Aerovee, deal with the minor adjustments process and go a little further balancing my components. I might even go for some special coatings here and there for chambers and pistons. Building it yourself gives you the freedom to do this and to know what went into your motor. That golden beauty, all built and test run, coming out of the crate (in Joe's photos) sure was purty though! -- James
