Things like the starter, alternator, intake, and exhaust for the aerovee were all designed to fit around a Sonex/Waiex/Xenos mount and cowling. Are you sure that the other companies will fit or are you willing to design a new mount and cowling to make it fit? Will the sonex baffling fit or will you have to design your own? Is the prop hub lenght the same? Lots of variables to think about.

yes it will fit,

see this revmaster on the sonex VW mount:

and with the sonex cowling:

custom baffles (but that's not too hard to do):

and here's a prince prop on a revmaster:

Nice. I didn't say it couldn't be done, just that there were more variables to consider than just if it fit the mount. It's good to see that someone has already tried it with the revmaster and doccumented it with pictures. Do you by any chance know of someone with a similar site for the great plains engine?

Can't find any builders logs but I know there are plenty Sonex's out there flying the GP engines.
The GP engine also fits on the Sonex VW mount and under the Sonex VW cowl.

The VW mount and cowl provided by Sonex are generic, they were developed before Sonex actually had their own AeroVee VW conversion and thus intended to fit most VW conversions.

Here's some info and pictures of GP engines on Sonex's:

Tom Huebbe's Sonex #24 first flight with the GP engine:

Note that most of the GPAS engines have a fairly large "bump" on the top of the cowl to clear the ignition system that mounts in the distributor hole on the engine. The Aerovee doesn't have this issue.

Not really the case, this only applies to GPAS's lowest cost ignition . They have several other options that would not need a cowling bump.

Rizzz (michael) Thanks for the great link on the split cowl.I'm hoping I can duplicate it on the Onex.http://www.americansonexassociation.org ... ingmod.htm Much cleaner look.

I think the factory Onex already has the horizontal split cowl. I'm hoping they are shipped that way in the kit.

I'm thinking that cut out around the valve covers is going to take a bit of time to complete. Having only ordered the tail section I'm a bit worried I'm going to complete it too quickly and will be waiting some time for the fuselage or wings. I'm telling myself to go ahead and order the rest of the kit but the CEO doesn't seem to like that idea right now.

Other factors are "education" and "fun". If a person does not know much about engines, this might be a perfect time to learn with excellent tutoring thrown in by the manuals and factory support. I built my AeroVee for my Xenos for those reasons. Cost was not my prime reason. It is the same with Ham radio, kayaks, etc., part of the joy for me was the building of it. I really, really enjoy doing this sort of thing - kit building, building from scratch, etc. If you can't open it, you don't own it - somebody said. Of course, I trust my skills and friendly advisors - Hey, it's just me, your mileage may vary.... :-)
