How about in terms of CHT? I think the lower hole would be detrimental to cylinder cooling.

Good question Bryan. Again, I noticed little change overall.

If I get a chance here soon, I’ll try to perform a quick test and do a test flight with the cover plate installed and then again with the plate removed just to see what, if any, differences there are. Hopefully I can get out to the airport and try it!

Question: how did you guys safety the two long bolts through the oil cooler? I see 3 options:
1) Don't bother.
2) Drill holes in the bolt heads for safety wire.
3) Make a little piece of metal to match the two bolt holes and have bendable locking tabs on it.

Went with the swiss cheese heads. Couldn't justify doing nothing, and the cowl already touches the bolt head, so no room for the tab option. AN4H-26A if you don't have any better luck than I do drilling through the heads.

I went with #1, with a dab of torque-seal indicator like all the other bolts/nuts on the engine. Used standard AN4 torque:

I went with Option 1. 2.5 years and not so much as a hair of movement.

For that matter, the ONLY places on the entire plane where I have safety wire are:
1. The bolts holding on my AeroInjector air filter
2. The AeroInjector itself has a safety wire holding it to the intake tubing just in case a backfire tries to blow it off.
3. Between the joints between the two exhaust pipes (in case the springs fail).

Other than that, none, just as (not) called for on the plans. After 5 years of annual condition inspections the only fasteners that have ever moved and I've had to tighten are the exhaust flange bolts. I have torque seal on most fasteners throughout the plane.

I wish that oil cooler was one row shorter. I can't get the top hinges together to pin. Looks like I need to clearance the top sheet metal some more.

Bryan,

I had to file a chamfer at about 45 degree angle on the top front. It actually went as far as the first bit of the fins.

Your mileage may vary.
