Painting the case

Postby Gripdana » Mon Nov 24, 2014 8:59 am

I am getting ready to paint the case. What have others done to the flywheel side? Paint it or leave it?

Dana, I painted the back of my case but most of that paint is covered by the accessory case. I don't think you need to paint anything inside the outer ring as that is not visible when mounted. Very little of the back of the case is visible.

I had to paint my engine twice. The first time I used automotive engine spray paint and that peeled off during construction.

The second time I used the Hoover Method using a thin coat of paint by brush thinned out with gasoline (50/50 mix). This coat has endured well. Several other builders recommended this approach. You can learn more on Bob Hoover's VW website.

Any other suggestions out there on how to paint your magnesium engine case on the Aerovee?

I used the "Barbecue Black" paint for repainting grills. My engine hasn't flown yet, but it seems to be holding up just fine so far.

Has anybody not painted their case? I am looking at all that masking and I'm losing enthusiasm. I never saw a painted case in a bug.

Painting the case

Mine is not painted Bryan. I did not see the point in doing so.

No issues so far and I sure do not expect any.

I have one painted and one not painted. Can't see what difference the paint would make. Looking at the two engines I prefer the unpainted one.

I painted mine Chevy Engine Orange. I LOVE the color, but after time it does start flaking off.

I usually don't paint my cases. Most of the other stuff I use heigh temp flat or matte black. Actual BBQ paint seems to hold up better than the stuff you get in the auto parts stores.
